How to Balance a Dark Photo

  • Open file to be balanced in PS
  • In Layers right click and duplicate the layer
  • In Layers, select the bottom layer to activate the brush tool and eye on the bottom layer only.
  •

  • Adjust bottom layer with Curves.
  • Select Top Layer (Brush active) and eye active for top and bottom layer.

  • With Top Layer selected choose the eraser brush with pressure set at 65% and remove from top layer in dark areas to allow the modifications made in curves to show through.
    • After the top dark layer has been removed you can do back-and-forth adjustments of each layer in curves to balance the photo even more.

When you are satisfied, be sure to flatten the image and save it  as a tif or jpg.

    Good luck!
